Why SEO matters for plumbers (more than for almost any trade)
Plumbing is one of the highest-intent search categories on Google. Nobody searches for a plumber for fun. They search because something has just gone wrong, and they need it fixed today. That makes search the single most valuable marketing channel for any plumbing business.
The good news: most plumbers ignore SEO completely or pay an agency to spam directories on their behalf. That means a plumber who actually does the basics well can outrank competitors who’ve been in business twice as long.
Your Google Business Profile is the most important asset you have
Above the organic search results, Google shows a “map pack” of three local businesses. If you’re in there, the phone rings. If you’re not, you’re invisible to most local searchers, no matter how good your website is.
Getting into the map pack starts with a properly optimised Google Business Profile. We covered the full setup in our post on how to set up and optimise your Google Business Profile, but the highlights for plumbers:
- Pick the right primary category. “Plumber” is the obvious one. Add secondary categories like “Heating contractor” or “Bathroom remodeler” if relevant.
- List your service area. Pick the towns and postcodes you actually cover. Don’t try to cover all of England. Google distrusts that.
- Add real photos. Vans, completed jobs, your team. Stock photos look obviously fake.
- List every service. Boiler repair, leak detection, blocked drains, emergency callouts, bathroom installations. Each one should be its own service entry.
- Keep opening hours up to date. Especially “24-hour emergency”.
Reviews are the single biggest local ranking signal
For trades, reviews matter more than almost anything else. They influence rankings directly, and they influence the customer’s decision once they’ve found you. The plumber with 187 reviews and a 4.9 rating is going to win the call almost every time over the one with 12 reviews.
How to actually get them:
- Ask in person at the end of every job. “If you’ve been happy with the work, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It’s the easiest way to support a small business.”
- Send a follow-up text or email with a direct link to your review page.
- Reply to every review you get. Especially the negative ones. Future customers are watching.

If you’re not asking every customer for a review, you’re leaving the most powerful local ranking signal on the table. Your competitors are asking. You should be too.
Build a proper website (not a digital business card)
Most plumbing websites are shockingly bad. One page, no real content, no service breakdowns, no photos. That’s a missed opportunity, because Google rewards depth and visitors trust websites that look like real businesses.
The bare minimum for a plumber’s website:
- A clear, fast homepage with phone number front and centre
- Individual pages for each main service (boiler repair, leak detection, emergency callouts, bathroom installation, etc.)
- Pages for each main town you serve
- A photo gallery of completed work
- Real reviews and testimonials, not stock praise
- A short “about” page with your story and your team
- Easy contact options: phone, WhatsApp, form
Speed matters too. If your site takes five seconds to load on mobile, customers will close it and call the next plumber on the list. We talked about this in why website speed matters.
Service pages are how you rank for specific searches
Generic homepages don’t rank for specific service searches. If you want to show up for “boiler repair Bognor Regis”, you need a page that’s actually about boiler repair in Bognor Regis. Not a paragraph on your homepage.
A good service page includes:
- The service name in the H1
- A clear description of what you do
- Common problems and how you fix them
- Real photos of similar jobs
- Testimonials from customers who used that exact service
- Pricing guidance (or a clear “free quote” path)
- Service area
- A clear call to call or message you
Build one of these per service. It’s a few hours of work that pays for itself for years. We talked about service-page principles in our piece on local SEO for service businesses.
Local citations: the boring foundation that still matters
Citations are mentions of your business name, address and phone number on other websites: directories like Yell, Checkatrade, Trustpilot, FreeIndex, plus industry directories and local business directories. They give Google more confidence that you’re a real business at a real address.
What matters:
- Consistency. Same name, same address, same phone number everywhere.
- Quality over quantity. Twenty good listings beats two hundred spammy ones.
- Industry-relevant directories where possible.
For more on this, see local citations: what they are and why they matter.
Trade-specific things that work
- Add Gas Safe registration prominently. If you’re Gas Safe, your registration number should be visible on every page. It’s a trust signal and it’s required for gas work.
- Show your insurance. Public liability cover is reassuring; mention it.
- List response times. “Average response time: 47 minutes” beats vague promises.
- Show before/after photos. They build trust faster than any sales copy.
- Be honest about pricing. “Callout from £65, no charge if we can’t fix it” is more compelling than “competitive prices”.
What to skip
- Buying backlinks from random SEO sellers
- Posting on every social platform: pick one, do it well
- Stuffing keywords into your homepage
- Hiring an agency that won’t tell you exactly what they do for the money
